What is Gutenberg?
Due for release early 2018, Gutenberg is set to change the way content is created and maintained in WordPress websites which will affect all our current sites as the update is rolled out. After more than a decade of using the tired 'text editor', the world’s most popular content management system (CMS) is shaking things up with the new version 5.0 Gutenberg. It's WordPress aligning itself as the premium CMS as the likes of WIX and Squarespace join the marketplace.
What are the concerns?
Whenever a major update comes to a popular piece of software like WordPress, there will inevitably be concerns about the impact on current themes and plugins, Gutenberg is a fundamentally new approach to content creation that will have far-reaching repercussions such as plugins breaking and theme compatibility.
Protecting your asset
Clients that are on one of our Care Plans need not worry, as part of your monthly maintenance your site will already be up to date and ready for the switchover. We can use part of your allocated monthly allowance to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible. For clients not on a monthly Care Plan, we would advise you speak to us about signing up. Websites have lots of moving parts and are not a 'build and forget'. If your site is old, hasn't upgraded in months or even years, unfortunately, it's likely your site will break at the next update. We're here to help make this transition as smooth as possible.
A bright future
Concerns aside, it’s clear that Gutenberg provides a fantastic new vision for what WordPress will become moving forward. The CMS wants to align itself with the other big players when it comes to ease-of-use, while still maintaining its reputation as the worlds most popular, highly-customisable and flexible CMS.
